We’ve all been reminded on occasion that we have the power to choose how we feel, which is easier said than done. Especially if we’ve been neglecting our brain health.
Helen Keller said, “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.”
But how do we get to the point where optimism rules our outlook, and positivity impacts our reactions to the stresses and challenges of life?
While not easy, becoming an optimist can have a profound impact on how we feel overall. Often our first thoughts when faced with something difficult are the worst-case scenario, worrying about things that usually don’t even happen, and causing ourselves undue stress. Stress affects nearly every aspect of life, from how we sleep to our relationships with others. Responses to problems can prompt us to withdraw socially or take out frustrations in the form of emotional outbursts aimed toward those closest to us.
If we haven’t taken preemptive measures to establish emotional resilience and master our minds, stressful experiences can be detrimental to our overall health. The popular saying, “mind over matter” is most certainly applicable when it comes to managing our reactions, our thoughts, and our emotions, but learning how to do this takes dedication. Winston Churchill said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.” Keeping this in mind during challenges can make all the difference in how we react when faced with adversity and maintaining a positive mindset even when discouraged.
